Native and natural: Indigenous gardening. Many of us enjoy getting down and dirty in our gardens. Whether we are in a community allotment or growing on the patio, the advantages of gardening are too many to mention. And one of the best things about gardening is the possibility of planting indigenous species.
This article looks at why we should be going au naturale with natives. Why all the fuss? As cities and towns grow, we begin to impact on natural systems. These environments often contain fragile vegetation systems that are specifically adapted to certain conditions. As we move into these areas, plant species are affected, causing a drastic change, which can sometimes lead to the extinction of an entire vegetation type. Indi-genius There are a number of benefits of keeping things local, as these plants are adapted to:
This means that you won't have to spray your garden with harmful chemicals, but can rely on biological control to take care of garden nasties. This also means that you won't have to water your garden as frequently as you might with exotic species. Top tip: As native plants are adapted to climatic conditions, you can either rely on the rain, or use water captured in a rain barrel, which should prove more than enough for your needs. The birds and the bees Indigenous plant species also provide more services to native plants and birds. From improving food sources for insects and birds, to offering a home to insects and other small beasts, the opportunities to improve the local environment by planting native species are almost endless. Top tip: By keeping it local, you will be able to enjoy the birds and the bees in your very own oasis. Islands in the sun Another important environmental benefit of planting indigenous species in urban gardens is that we create islands and nodes of native vegetation. If a series of gardens practice natural landscaping, then we create a corridor which can connect systems where similar vegetation is found. This way, animals, birds and other plants can migrate across these systems, without being marooned in a foreign system of manicured lawns and pruned petunias. Top tip: Keep your garden as natural as possible, to ensure that birds and animals feel at home. The more manicured an area, the less chance you have of wildlife sticking around. Tools of the trade When planting and maintaining your indigenous garden, use eco-friendly gardening tools. This way you promote sustainability from the ground up. You can also get a helping hand by incorporating earthworms into your gardening routine. Whether these wiggling wonders are aerating the soil, or creating mountains of rich compost, they are very useful when working your garden. Top tip: A worm farm is a great addition to any garden, and can be made at home or bought from a gardening store or online. Native and innovative Planting a garden filled to the brim with indigenous plant varieties is not just the most eco-friendly option, but also the most cost-effective. Not only are you going to be saving loads of money on fertiliser costs, watering and exotic plants, but you will be able to spend less time pruning and more time enjoying the myriad of birds, animals and insects that will soon call your garden home. |
As a personal testimonial, we currently have documented 86 different species of birds, in our indigenous garden project which is now 7 years old.
The indigenous garden allows for seed eaters, fruit eaters, insect eaters and raptors. A vast number of caterpillars and moths visit the garden and during summer nights the water features are alive with scores of Bushveld Rainfrog (Breviceps adspersus) |
